Results (Analysed by SGS Hong Kong Laboratory)

The levels of four heavy metals (cadmium, lead, copper and zinc) were measured in the sediments collected from gei wai, and all were found to be within the safety levels as specified in the quality criteria. There was also no significant difference in the levels of heavy metals in the sediment now as compared with results recorded ten years ago. This may due to the fact that the mobilization and volatilization of heavy metals in soils is usually low.

Examination of the water quality in the gei wai show that it was fairly acceptable when compared to WQO for the Deep Bay Water Control Zone. However, the amounts of E.coli and suspended solid were substantially higher and were over the acceptable concentrations. This may possibly have been due to the loading from untreated sewage from villages and livestock farms in the catchment. In the case of E.coli recorded in the water entering the gei wai from Deep Bay during water exchange, the levels were several hundred folds higher as compared to WQO standards (<610cfu/100mL). For suspended solid, the elevated levels was possibly due to the increased organic matter and nutrient contamination as reflected by the high level of ammonium in the water.

In summary, the water quality in Deep Bay is having an adverse effect on Mai Po through nutrient enrichment and bacterial contamination. To tackle this pollution problems, the pollution loading in Deep Bay must be reduced through implementation of relevant pollution control legislation on both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen sides of the catchment.
