Threats to Chinese White Dolphins

Hong Kong water is seriously polluted, and as one of the residents of the local waters, the Chinese White Dolphins have been severely affected.
Sewage from humans contains large amount of bacteria, when untreated and being discharged into the sea, it can cause serious harm to the health of the Chinese White Dolphins. Harmful chemicals from pesticides, effluent, and other substances can harm their ability to cope with diseases and parasites or even poison the animals outright.
The busy boat traffic in Hong Kong water has a serious impact on the Chinese White Dolphins as well. High speed ferries, trawlers and containers can cause injury to the dolphins. Even the slow one will hurt them. Noise from the boat engine will interrupt the communication between the dolphins as well. Click to Enlarge
The loss of habitats is another critical problem that the dolphins need facing. The natural coastal areas are destroyed by large-scale reclamation projects, such as the new airport. The size of the natural habitat for the Chinese White Dolphins have been decreasing.
It is increasingly difficult for dolphins to look for food in the local waters; the area has been intensively fished and catch has been decreasing rapidly. Click to Enlarge
