Adopt-a-green Fish Farm Latest News
Realistically, a farmer keeps on farming because they benefit economically from farming. This year, the 'Adopt-a-green' fish farm project is planning to develop a new business model for increasing the market value of locally produced freshwater fish based around traditional management practices and the raising of organic fish. The idea is to encourage fishpond farmers around Deep Bay to continue pond-fish farming so that the fishponds can be actively managed in a manner that maintains their importance for wildlife, particularly waterbirds.
To be sustainable, the scheme must balance economic, environmental and social considerations. The importance of the fishpond farmers' management practices in managing the ponds and its positive impacts to the environment, ecological importance and the Hong Kong society as a whole will be highlighted. Participating fishpond farmers will be encouraged to continue their traditional way of cultivating fish. This includes allowing vegetation to grow on the pond banks, and draining the ponds down in winter when waterbirds can feed on small fish trapped in the bottom. The management practices that carried out by the farmers must also be environmental-friendly under the Good Aquaculture Practices guidelines. The raising of organic fish provides direct and extra economic return to the community through the reassurance that fish have not been chemically treated, and will be good for people's health. We hope that the first batch of fish fry for our organic trial would be stocked by this summer.
