Good for the Forest – FSC Product Sales Almost Doubled

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified products are selling better and better. In 2006, 18 member companies of the WWF WOOD GROUP achieved sales of 179 million Swiss Francs, almost twice the amount of the previous year.

In 2005 the companies achieved roughly 98 million Swiss Francs, in 2004 the figure was 93 million.

Simone Stammbach, Project Manager for the WWF WOOD GROUP, is excited about this development: "The WWF's strategy to cooperate with businesses is paying off. Our common sponsorship of the FSC label for environmentally and socially sound forest management practices has been honoured by the consumers as well. More and more people are choosing wood and paper products that don't come from unsustainable practices."

The WWF WOOD GROUP, currently participated by 18 companies, provides a platform for companies that are committed to responsible wood and paper purchasing policies.

The FSC label is issued by the Forest Stewardship Council, a non-profit organisation co-founded by the WWF in 1993. In Switzerland, as many as 624,000 hectares or 51 percent of forest area have already been certified. Worldwide, the area of certified forest has reached 88.5 million hectares – an area the size of France, Italy and Switzerland combined.
