Ocean's 10

10 Jun 2007
Hong Kong's waters are home to a rich variety of marinelife. Over 1,000 fish species and more species of coral than the Caribbean are known from local waters– yet most people know little about the dynamic range of marine biodiversity that exists on our doorstep. Without public understanding and support, it is difficult for WWF to be effective in pushing for greater conservation of our sea.
In June 2005, WWF launched the Ocean’s 10 programme with the support of Solomon Systech. The three-year public education programme had the goal of highlighting the plight of ten local marine species and increasing their public profile. Each of the ten species, which were selected with the help of local and international marine experts, represents an array of biodiversity and marine habitats. Collectively, they also highlight several different conservation issues for which public awareness is paramount.

Throughout the programme, a series of interactive activities, including voting for favourite Ocean’s 10 members, a multi-media creative competition and a bus design competition were organized with very encouraging responses from the community.
