Biodiversity Management Zone
This zone focuses on biodiversity conservation, education and training in an actively managed environment. The zone comprises 10 BMZ areas.
Core Zone
The purpose of the Core Zone is to provide an undisturbed, largely natural reference area. It includes open marine water, intertidal mudflats, mangal, and a small area of freshwater habitat. Maintenance of natural processes has priority and access is generally limited to essential management, monitoring and research purposes.
Private Land Zone
Within the Ramsar Site boundary some areas of land under private ownership can be found. While the private ownership status means that the land is not subject to the prescriptions of the Ramsar management plan, existing planning constraints prevent any significant change in use.
Public Access Zone
The purpose of the Public Access Zone is to enable visitors to have unrestricted (but managed) access to the natural beauty of Mai Po. This provides opportunities for education and raising conservation awareness of the ecological importance of the Ramsar site.
Wise Use Zone
The purpose of the Wise Use Zone is to facilitate, encourage and promote ecologically sustainable use of wetlands and other natural resources in a manner compatible with the Ramsar Site management goals and objectives. The Wise Use Zone also provides a buffering function additional and complementary to that provided by buffering zones outside the Ramsar site.
