Mr Gavin Cooper, Wandering Tattlers, described his Bird of the Day at the Big Bird Race Celebration Dinner in 1986. Mr Cooper has participated in every Race since 1985. The first Big Bird Race, held in 1984, was to raise funds for purchasing privately managed gei wai at Mai Po for conservation.   The Mai Po Wildlife Education Centre opened by WWF International President HRH Duke of Edinburgh in 1986. The Centre, renovated in 1996, further promotes nature conservation among visitors with interactive display facilities.

Mr Christopher Patten, former Hong Kong Governor, declares Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay as A Wetland of International Importance at a ceremony in 1995. Standing next to him is Dr Lawrence Lee, former Director of Agriculture and Fisheries Department.   David Melville, WWF Hong Kong's former Executive Director, working with scientists to place satellite transmitters on Black-faced Spoonbills caught at Mai Po in 1999 to collect vital information on their migratory route. Only 800 of this globally endangered species still remain in the world.

Mr. Nigel Watt with his wife Dahphne joined the Big Bird Race at Mai Po in 1985. The barren land right to the visitor education centre is the location of the Mai Po Education Centre.   Sir David Wilson, former Hong Kong Governor, officiated at the opening of Peter Scott Field Studies Centre in 1990. Joining the ceremony were Lady Philippa Scott, the wife of Sir Peter Scott, Michael Chalmers, WWF Hong Kong's Buildings and Accommodation Committee Chairman and Michael Lau, former Mai Po Reserve Manager.
