Global warming has arrived in Hong Kong. We can all see it and feel it. As our colleagues at Hong Kong Observatory pointed out 2007 saw the hottest Chinese New Year on record. October 2006, November 2006 and February 2007 were the hottest on record.
Globally, according to NASA, the hottest five years on record have all occurred since 1998.
The consequences, if continue to burn more and more fossil fuels will be catastrophic. Water shortages, crop failures, coastal flooding and the spread of diseases are all forecast by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The good news is that climate disaster is not a foregone conclusion. Global warming is mainly caused by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas and by chopping down Earth's natural forests. The solutions - clean energy and stopping deforestation - are at our finger tips and people everywhere are taking action. |
