In recent years, WWF Hong Kong has scrutinized all proposed drainage works in ecologically sensitive streams to ensure impacts to stream biodiversity are reduced and minimized. Our expertise and advice has resulted in changes in attitudes and techniques to flood prevention, and environmental considerations have become a key element in drainage designs. Nevertheless, little efforts have been made to restore degraded or damaged sections of ecologically important streams. Building on our experience on the recent development of environmentally friendly drainage design and our participation in the Tung Chung stream rehabilitation, we will encourage the authorities to initiate rehabilitation programmes in channelised streams.
The problems of facing freshwater biodiversity in the Pearl River Delta have complex linkages requiring an integrated approach. Drawing upon WWF China's experiences in the Yangtze River, involving a range of stakeholders in the formation and implementation of a management plan for the Pearl River offers the best answer for conserving freshwater ecosystems while allowing sufficient water for human populations. WWF Hong Kong will utilize our existing freshwater and wetland expertise to provide solutions.
