Reef Check is the largest international coral reef monitoring program involving recreational divers and marine scientists, and WWF has been participating in an annual event in Hong Kong since 1998. The objectives are to raise public awareness about the value of coral reefs, the threats to their health and the solutions to these problems; and to obtain data on coral reef status in order to allow them to be managed on a local and regional scale. WWF and our scientists have been monitoring the coral communities at Moon Island, Hoi Ha Wan since 1997.
The Hong Kong Reef Check, organized by the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD) and Reef Check Foundation since 2000, is scheduled to be held between July and September this year. This year WWF invites 8-12 recreational divers to form the WWF Reef Check team and undertakes an underwater survey on the coral habitat in Hong Kong. A basic training on underwater biological survey will be provided.
