SOS - Save Our Seas Campaign

A Strong Public Call for Immediate Government Action to Protect the Seriously Threatened Marine Environment

Almost 60,000 people demand government action on effective marine conservation measures and the development of sustainable fishery practices

As at 26 Jun 2008

WWF launched a signature campaign in late March to enlist public support for our Save our Seas movement. In around two month's time, over 59,000 people signed the petition online and offline to show their support, making it the biggest ever environmental petition in Hong Kong. The message was that Hong Kong people want no more delay of government action.

On 10 June 2008, we submitted the petition and all the signatures to the Chief Executive and Executive Council members, requesting their prompt action on the concerned issues. We will continue to monitor the government's response and action.

  Perception towards Designating No-Take Zones

An opinion poll reveals public support for no-fishing in all Hong Kong marine parks

A recent study commissioned by WWF found an overwhelming majority (over 80%) of Hong Kong people agree that protection for threatened marine life and habitats in Hong Kong is insufficient. Almost all respondents agreed that marine parks should be designated as "no-take" protected areas for marine creatures to survive and reproduce.

  1. 90% agree that more effort should be made to protect threatened marine life and habitats in Hong Kong
  2. 95% found it reasonable to establish no-take zones for providing sanctuaries to marine life.
  3. 87% believe all marine parks in Hong Kong should be made no-fishing protected areas
  4. On average respondents thought that a hefty 47% of Hong Kong waters should be no-take zones.
  5. 69% believed (compared with a much lower 9% in an equivalent survey in 2005) that individuals are responsible for protecting Hong Kong's marine environment and species.

*The opinion survey, undertaken by TNS in January and February 2008, collected views from 1,003 Cantonese-speaking Hong Kong people between the age of 15 and 64.
