Objectives
- To enhance students' understanding of the basic concepts of
biodiversity through this learning experience
| |
Place: |
Outdoor / Park / School
Garden |
| |
Duration: |
30 minutes |
| |
Grouping: |
5 to 6 students per group |
| |
Level: |
Secondary school students |
| |
Materials: |
Paper, pen and four pieces
of five-metre long cotton strings, with each string being clearly
marked at intervals of every 10 cm. |
Procedures
- Divide the students into four groups and give each group a
string, pens and paper
- Each group has to extend the string to its full length, and then
place it on the ground. Ask the students to select a place where they
think the maximum number of different plants or animals can be found.
- After the students have laid the string, they have to walk the length
of the string together, and record, by drawing, the different plants
and animals that 'touch' the string.
- Ask each group to present their findings with one of the other groups.
- Check if any group records a remarkably high or low number or living
organisms and discuss with students the reasons for their high/low
counts. Special attention should be put on the texture of the soil/
ground, availability of water, and the degree of shading where the
string was set.
