Adopt-a-Green Fish Farm

Threats and Problems

From the mid-1990s, the increasing import of more cheaply produced freshwater fish from Mainland China has led to a decline in the profitability of pond-fish farming around Deep Bay. The intensive competition, thus, poses negative impacts on the fish-pond farming industry in Hong Kong.

In response, local pond-fish farmers either:

1. leave the industry and abandon their ponds that some fishponds become inactive;

2. intensify their farming practices to increase the frequency of harvesting through the year and not to completely drain down their fishponds for harvesting every winter.

Consequently, the ecological value of the fish ponds is lost as the management of fish pond changes.
