"Friends of Mai Po" Mai Po Volunteer Programme

Mai Po Nature Reserve – ‘Really wet and wonderful’

The wetlands surrounding Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay in the north-western part of Hong Kong, are renowned as a haven for both migratory and wintering waterbirds, as well as a refuge for a diversity of other wildlife.

In 1984, WWF Hong Kong began to carry out active management inside the Nature Reserve for environmental education and conservation purposes and today,, it has become a centre for wetland education, research and monitoring, a practical example of wetland conservation and management.

Become a “Friends of Mai Po”, making a difference!

WWF is now recruiting volunteers to help us manage and conserve the wetland inside Mai Po Nature Reserve. This will give you many opportunities to:

  • Organize nature appreciation activities in Mai Po;
  • Try field work inside Mai Po and help in our wetland management tasks;
  • Being a scientist and participate in wetland research and monitoring.

Recruitment will be divided into different stages, updated information will be put into WWF Hong Kong’s website frequently.

Join us and play your part in protecting nature. Your support is vital in helping us achieve our mission. Together we can leave a living planet for our children.

“Friends of Mai Po” First Roll Call - Planting Action

Each year, WWF plants a variety of grasses inside Mai Po Nature Reserve to create a better environment for our wildlife.

The grasses act as a natural and soft barrier, minimizing the disturbance caused by human activities to the migratory birds that congregate in Mai Po. In addition they also provide food, particularly seeds, for wildlife in the reserve such as Buntings, and provide homes for small mammals such as mice.

Planting Date:

  • 27 th May 2006 (SAT) 14: 30 – 17:00
  • 4 th Jun 2006 (SUN) 10:30 – 13:00
  • 24 th Jun 2006 (SAT) 14:30 – 17:00

Gathering Venue: Visitor Centre, Mai Po Nature Reserve
