The Rotary Centennial Institute for Wetland Conservation was established
in 2005 by WWF and the five Rotary clubs in of Rotary District 3450 Area
5, to celebrate the one-hundredth birthday of Rotary International. The
aim of the Institute is to organize activities to increase public awareness
of the importance of wetlands in Hong Kong.
On 13 th January 2007, the Institute will organize a "Field Trip
to the Lok Ma Chau Mitigation Area", in order to allow professionals,
NGOs and the public who are interested in the KCRC's project to construct
the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, to have first hand experience of the wetland
management work carried out at the mitigation area.
The mitigation area at Lok Ma Chau was set up to compensate for the
loss of fishpond wetlands due to the construction of the railway terminal
at Lok Ma Chau. The aim of the management works of the area is to increase
the ecological value of the area by creating a diverse wetlands habitat
and thus attract more waterbirds using it.
