Two black-faced spoonbills were seen in Tangtou Town at Minjiang Estuary ( 26o01.757'N, 119o37.573'E), on 1 March 2003 at 9:10am, when Fujian Forestry Department and National Bird-ringing Centre were carrying out a waterbird survey at the costal area of Changle Municipality, Fujian Province. The tide was high when the survey took place, and the black-faced spoonbills rested at the not-yet-flooded mudflat. Minjiang Estuary situates at South Asia tropic, with warm climate and abundant food in low beach. Each year during the migratory period, thousands of waterbirds winter or rest here. This survey also discovered 3 White Pelicans, about 10,000wild geese and ducks include Green-winged Teal, Eurasian Wigeon, Spotbill Duck and Mallard; and also 5,000 plovers and curlews like Eurasian Curlew, Dunlin, Rufous-necked Sandpiper, Kentish Plover and Black-bellied Plover!COn the other hands, a flock of about 1,000 Swan Geese Anas cygnoides was discovered in Wenling Town at Minjiang Estuary on 8 January 2003. The Fujian provincial government is now planning to designate this area as a nature reserve to enhance conservation work.
