Pheasant-tailed Jacanas and Painted Snipe are normally rare visitors
to Mai Po Nature Reserve. As a result, Mai Po staff and visitors to the Reserve
have been surprised when since April this year, both species have been frequently
seen in the Reserve.
In the case of the Painted Snipe, the birds
were sometimes seen as a pair (1 male and 1 female), in a flock (4
females and 1 males) or as a young pair. At first, it was hoped that
the Painted Snipe might be breeding at the reserve and this was confirmed
in late May, when Mai Po staffs found a nest with a male incubating
the eggs.
As for the Pheasant-tailed Jacana, two have been
seen in the reserve. We hope that this is also a pair and that they
too, will nest and produce the next generation of Jacana at Mai Po.
