Earth moving works at gei wai 16/17

Gei wai 16/17 is the main bird watching area within the Mai Po Nature Reserve where four out of a total of 11 bird hides are found. Up to 10,000 waders can be found here during the early winter and spring migrations. In order to improve the area, by providing more space for the waders and enhancing bird watching, earthmoving is being carried out within this gei wai.

The works started in December 2001 but were suspended and the gei wai then refilled with water in February 2002 to restore the habitat for migratory birds. Work has recently resumed and will continue until the end of July 2002. It is expected that only the middle of the three islands can be removed this year. The remaining two islands may be removed in coming years but the work can only be done during non-wintering and non-migratory periods.
