Massive coastal reclamation in S. Korea may impact on Hong Kong

The South Korean government is about to complete the 33km long seawall of the largest coastal reclamation in the world, covering an area of 40,000, or about four times the size of Hong Kong! The site at Saemangeum, is on the west coast of S. Korea and many scientists, green groups and local people are against this project because of the social, economic and environmental impacts it will cause. The Government says that the reclamation is need to provide more land for rice farming but with increasees in agricultural technology, S. Korea now annually produces a surplus of rice.

Many of the species of migratory waterbirds that winters or passes through Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay also uses the mudflats at Saemangeum. Loss of those coastal wetlands may well impact on the waterbirds that migrate through Hong Kong.
