Oriental White Stork


Oriental White Stork (the right one) at Mai Po

Endangered species ' Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana) ' found at Mai Po Nature Reserve on 5th January 2004.

According to Birdlife International (2000), the world population is estimated 3000. Recent development of wetland particularly in the Yangtze basin, has reduced the area of habitat for wintering birds and caused disturbance.





They are irregular and rare winter visitor in Hong Kong. After large influx of birds had been recorded in the winter of 1990 - 91 (The peak count was 121birds), they seldom been recorded in Hong Kong.
