Join the petition against the world's largest
coastal reclamation in South Korea
Content | Background
Information
Over the past weeks, we have put up information about
the damaging 40,000 ha coastal reclamation at Saemangeum in South Korea.
Now, the WBKEnglish network and the Korean Federation for Environmental
Movement's international section have teamed up to develop a petition
opposing the Saemangeum reclamation [http://www.wbkenglish.com/petition01.asp]
aimed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade here in South Korea.
This petition comes after the decision of the
court on July 15th to suspend the Saemangeum reclamation project while
the project's legitimacy is reconsidered. [see http://www.wbkenglish.com/saemref.asp#latnews]
and [http://english.kfem.or.kr/cgi/last.cgi?table=eng_ns&class=all&id=94&cnt=88&page=14&user=guest].
The court is now expected to make a further
pronouncement on Monday, August 18th so please, sign the petition as
soon as possible.
In the 12 days since launching the petition
(on July 18), about 2 700 online signatures from people in 54 countries
have so far been collected. Most of the signatures were collecetd through
the active support of ca 15 websites linking to the petition. These
are mostly birdwatcher's websites (the largest of which is said to
get 1 million hits a month), but include e.g. Birdlife International's
[see http://www.birdlife.org/news/news/2003/07/saemankeum.html]
and the Ramsar Bureau's [see July 26th, http://www.ramsar.org/w.n.html].
