1300 participants joined Walk for Nature to support WWF (19 March 2006)

The Hon. Choy So Yuk, WWF Hong Kong Ambassador Mr Daniel Wu and Miss Gigi Leung, together with Mr Markus Shaw, WWF Hong Kong Chairman, today joined 1,300 nature lovers to explore the beauty of Hong Kong¡¦ s natural environment at Sai Kung and help raise funds for WWF¡¦s conservation and education work. AIA Foundation is the premium sponsor and Canon Hongkong Co. Ltd as the major sponsor.

¡§Our natural environment is at stake and we need urgent and effective conservation actions to protect these precious natural habitats. Public appreciation of nature and better understanding of local conservation issues will definitely help push the government to take more urgent and effective conservation actions to protect our environment. We also need your support for our conservation actions to leave our future generation a living Hong Kong, " said Mr Markus Shaw, WWF Hong Kong Chairman.

The Walk For Nature includes the 5-km ¡§Nature Explorer¡¨ and 25-km ¡§Nature Challenger¡¨. Participants will learn the importance of nature conservation while enjoying a leisure walk in the countryside or taking a challenge in a natural environment.

Checkpoints were set along the walking route to enhance public understanding on the importance of nature conservation and WWF¡¦s major conservation issues. The challenge started from Wan Tsai Peninsula, Tai Tan Country Trail, Pak Sha O, Sham Chung, Yung Shue O, Jacob¡¦s Ladder, Cheung Sheung, Pak Tam Au and To Kwa Peng, and finishes at Wong Shek Pier. All participants have to complete the race within 8 hours.

Established in 1961, WWF's ultimate goal is to stop and eventually reverse environmental degradation and to build a future where people live in harmony with nature, by:

  • conserving the world's biological diversity
  • ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable
  • promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
WWF has been working here in Hong Kong since 1981 to ensure a better environment for the present and future generations in Hong Kong through implementation a wide range of focused conservation and environmental education programmes in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
