Ocean's 10 Winning Entries Show Serious Concerns On Future of Marine Life (10 Jun 2007)

Winners of the WWF's Ocean's 10 multi-media creative competition received prizes today at the prize presentation ceremony to acknowledge for their very creative "gifts"to the marine life in Hong Kong. The winning entries will be displayed in a travelling exhibition at Whampoa Fashion World (9 to 11 June 2007) and Olympian City II North Atrium (16 - 17 June 2007) to further raise public awareness on local marine conservation issues.

WWF launched the Ocean's 10 programme in June 2005 with Solomon Systech Limited as the major sponsor. This 3-year public education programme aims to raise public awareness in our marine environment by highlighting the threats and conservation status of 10 selected marine species in Hong Kong waters. A series of interactive activities were organized for the programme with very encourage response from the community.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Sam Lee, CEPA Director of WWF Hong Kong, said, "We are excited to see these highly creative and thoughtful gifts prepared for Ocean'10. The participants have transformed their concerns of our marine environment in the format of visual images and short videos. Apart from showing serious concerns about the future of Hong Kong's marine environment, they were also worried about the long-term survival of these marine species. Only 2% of Hong Kong's waters are under protected status as compared to about 40% on land. A comprehensive marine species conservation policy is therefore urgently needed. "

The multi-media creativity competition was launched this January inviting the general public to prepare a "visual" gift to the Ocean's 10. The competition, divided into digital image and short video sections, were open to secondary, post-secondary and open groups.

Mr. Percy Lam, President of Solomon Systech Limited, said at the ceremony, "This multi-media creativity competition is another key activity among our 3 years Ocean's 10 sponsorship program with WWF. As one of the hi-tech companies in Hong Kong, Solomon Systech is very keen on environmental protection. We share the same vision with WWF and support WWF in raising the awareness of the community on marine life through different activities in the Ocean's 10 program. I am really impressed by the winning designs in this multi-media creativity competition and I am sure the campaign has successfully drawn public attention in environmental protection."

The champions of the Digital Image Section are Ng Fei Lung (Open), Sun Chi Fai (Post Secondary) and Tong Tee Tak Judy (Secondary) whereas the top titles of the Short Video section go to Lam Sheung Ting (Open), Chiu Yip Shing, Chan Wai Sing (Post Secondary) and Kwok Ka Ling, Hsu Ching Ho (Secondary)
The winning entries were selected based on three criteria ¡V theme matching ability (35%), creativity (30%) and artistic quality (30%). The judging panels of digital image and short video were headed by Dr Rebecca Lee and film director Mr Pang Ho Cheung respectively.

Mr Alex Fong, Ocean's 10 Ambassador of WWF Hong Kong, said, "We can always show our care and concern to our marine environment by making some small changes in our personal life. For example, we can all be responsible consumers by buying or eating the seafood from sustainable source. WWF produced a seafood guide which has categorized 60 popular seafood into 3 groups ¡V green for "Recommendation", yellow for "Thinking twice" and red for "Avoid". With the guide, you can easily be a green and responsible seafood consumer."

On-line public polling will start from June to October 2007 when the general public can vote for "My Favourite Ocean's 10", "Ocean's 10 Most Wanted" and "The Most Energetic Ocean's 10".

The "Ocean's 10" marine species include Brain coral, Chinese bahaba, Chinese white dolphin, Green turtle, Hong Kong grouper, Horseshoe crab, Mudskipper, Sea grass, Purple sea urchin and Yellow croaker. Information of the Ocean's 10 species and their threats can be found on our newly launched Ocean's 10 website at www.wwf.org.hk/oceans10.

Special thanks to Fashion World, Wonderful Worlds of Whampoa for sponsoring the venue and JNC and Victorinox for their support to the competition.

WWF was established in 1961. WWF's ultimate goal is to stop and eventually reverse environmental degradation and to build a future where people live in harmony with nature, by:
- conserving the world's biological diversity
- ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable
- promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.

WWF has been working in Hong Kong since 1981 to ensure a better environment for the present and future generations through implementing a wide range of focused conservation and environmental education programs in Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Our conservation objectives are to conserve Hong Kong and China's biodiversity, improve the quality of our environment while motivating people to act to conserve our natural environment. Education is one of our key tools in pursuing our objectives. Every year our education and awareness programs reach over 120,000 students, teachers and members of the public in Hong Kong.
