Roadshow Throws Spotlight on Tiger Conservation

31 July 2017

[HONG KONG – 29 July 2017] As part of a multinational drive to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, WWF-Hong Kong is highlighting the threats currently faced by the world’s biggest cat at its inaugural tiger conservation roadshow, “Be a Tiger Ranger”. The kid-focused educational event kicked off today, Global Tiger Day, at Cityplaza in Taikoo Shing. Running from 28 July to 6 August, it comprises a series of interactive activities, including a virtual reality trip to the jungle, mini workshops and photo booth sessions that let visitors step into the shoes of a tiger ranger.

“Over the past seven years, WWF has been working with organisations and governments across the tiger range countries to fight the battle against extinction on a variety of fronts,” said WWF-Hong Kong CEO Mr Peter Cornthwaite. “We’ve already lost six out of nine tiger species and the remaining three face numerous threats from poachers who want to sell their skins and body parts.”

Present at the launch event was Ms Sylvia Chan, WWF-Hong Kong Executive Council Member, Beatrice Mok, Managing Director, Carthy Ltd., Ms Amie Lai, Sustainable Development Manager of Swire Properties Limited and Ms Koni Lui, Artist, Event Ambassador and tiger lover.

WWF One Planet - Youth education programme participants were also present to share with the audience their recent experiences on India’s tiger reserves. They will hold further sharing sessions on 30 July and during the weekend of 5-6 August.

WWF’s global tiger programme Tx2, was launched in 2010 with the 13 tiger range countries and aims to double the number of wild tigers by 2022 the next Chinese year of the tiger. The current global number of 3,890 tigers represents a population drop of over 95 per cent in the last century.

The roadshow will move to Telford Plaza in Kowloon Bay from 7 to 10 October.
