Around the world, we use more than one million tonnes of paper every day. But at the same time, the Earth is losing an area of forest the size of a football field every 1.2 seconds. Illegal logging is one of the major causes of this deforestation.

Around the world, we use more than one million tonnes of paper every day. But at the same time, the Earth is losing an area of forest the size of a football field every 1.2 seconds. Illegal logging is one of the major causes of this deforestation.

To help tackle the problem, it’s time to learn about timber and paper products that come from well-managed forests and responsible sources. FSC certification ensures that, through the responsible management of forests, no more trees are harvested than a forest can reproduce. This secures a constant source of raw material and the protection of the livelihoods of people working in the forest. FSC products come from forestry practices that are environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable.

Alistair Monument, FSC’s Asia-Pacific Regional Director says, “It is estimated that 30 per cent of the paper and furniture we consume in Hong Kong comes from illegal logging. But awareness of the FSC logo is rising in Hong Kong too. You can find it on bank statements, tissue paper and even red pocket envelopes.”

1. The FSC logo is not something new to Hong Kong – it’s on shopping bags and price tags, bank statements, cosmetics packaging, packaged food and drink at the supermarket, even on toilet paper! Find as many logos as you can!
