WWF-Hong Kong’s response to the report regarding the death of the Bryde’s whale in Sai Kung waters last year

Today, the government released the necropsy results and progress on the follow-up work regarding the Bryde's whale carcass discovered in the southern waters off Port Shelter water in Sai Kung in July 2023.

According to the reports, it was concluded that the whale's cause of death was due to fatal injuries caused by strike of a fast-moving vessel. WWF-Hong Kong wishes to express our sadness over this turn of events. We are aware that the relevant departments have formulated response mechanisms for future visits of cetaceans in Hong Kong waters. These include: inter-departmental response measures based on different situations and levels of cetacean presence, which also encompass the establishment of management zones in waters visited by transiting cetaceans. We consider these measures feasible and appropriate and are encouraged to see that the relevant departments have enhanced communication, internal training, and coordination.

We hope that relevant departments can continuously optimise the response mechanisms, and follow up on the review of relevant legislation to achieve effective enforcement. We will continue to channel recommendations to relevant departments.
