After last year’s postponement due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are thrilled that Big Bird Race 2021 was successfully held on 20 February under a new two-person team format in line with social distancing measures.

It was a great day out for avid and novice birders alike, with 22 teams fanning out across Hong Kong’s bird-rich areas, including Tai Po Kau, Long Valley and of course Mai Po.

A total of 192 species were identified during the 12-hour period, including collared crow, black-winged kite, Kloss’s leaf warbler, speckled piculet, Oriental White Stork and Brown Wood Owl.

“The teams involved rose to the challenge and produced a very creditable result in terms of the number of birds seen and the amount of money raised for essential habitat management work at Mai Po, Hong Kong’s premier wetland nature reserve.”
