Where Do They Live?

The Chinese White Dolphins like to live in rocky, shallow waters and can be found throughout the Indo-Pacific, from Australia and China, in the East, to South Africa in the West. In Hong Kong, however, they are found in the northern parts of Lantau Island, near Chap Lap Kok Airport Click to Enlarge, Sha Chau Click to Enlarge, Lung Kwu Chau and also in the south and south west coasts of Lantau. The dolphins are also in and around the Pearl River Estuary, west of Hong Kong, in Chinese waters.
Distribution
The population distribution of the Chinese White dolphins is subject to seasonal fluctuations. Numbers of dolphins in summer time is comparatively less than in winter. Male dolphins are known to increase their hunting grounds in the summer and therefore move away from Hong Kong waters in search of food. Results from Dr. Thomas Jefferson's recent study show that there are approximately 88 Chinese White dolphins throughout spring which then almost doubles in summer to 145.
