Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) introduced new consumer label to identify responsibly farmed seafood

ASC has recently produced its own label to certify responsibly farmed seafood. The on-pack label demonstrates to consumers that their seafood comes from farms which employ practices and standards that limit their impact on both the environment and the community.

ASC has recently produced its own label to certify responsibly farmed seafood.

The on-pack label demonstrates to consumers that their seafood comes from farms which employ practices and standards that limit their impact on both the environment and the community. Hence, consumers can easily make a conscious choice to purchase responsibly farmed seafood. As for producers, the ASC products demonstrate their social responsibility towards the environment and consumers.

At present, about half of all the seafood consumed is farmed and in some markets more farmed seafood is sold through retail than wild caught seafood. The first species to be awarded the ASC label will very likely be tilapia and audits are already planned for farms in Indonesia and Honduras. Later in the summer, the ASC label will be present on the packaging of tilapia in various supermarkets in Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, France, Sweden, Denmark and England. In addition to tilapia, ASC will also be certifying popularly farmed seafood such as freshwater trout, Pangasius, salmon, shrimp, yellowtail, abalone, scallop and oyster.

Founded by WWF and the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative in 2010, ASC is an independent, nonprofit organization aiming to establish a system for the certification of responsible fish farming across the globe.
