Hotel groups make waves in seafood sustainability
Since the start of our engagement with businesses in 2010, we have received tremendous support from the hotel industry. An example is InterContinental Hong Kong has taken the initiative to introduce an Ocean-Friendly Menu for their popular wedding banquets.
In view of our love of seafood, WWF-Hong Kong rolled out the Seafood Choice Initiatives to encourage people to consume sustainably and the seafood industry to adopt responsible sourcing practices.
Since the start of our engagement with businesses in 2010, we have received tremendous support from the hotel industry. In 2010, Marriott International made a global announcement on their sustainable seafood program, which specifies that the group’s 780 hotels will source at least 50% of their seafood from certified sustainable, responsible fisheries and aquaculture farms. In this connection, WWF-Hong Kong has worked with Marriott International hotels in Hong Kong to advise on their procurement policy, source sustainable seafood and roll out Ocean-Friendly Menus (menus designed according to WWF-Hong Kong’s Sustainable Seafood Guide). Following that, conservations efforts continued to be seen in a number of international hotel chains that have phased out unsustainable seafood and incorporated more sustainable products in their daily sourcing.
Many hotels in Hong Kong are now working with WWF-Hong Kong to source sustainable seafood. An example is InterContinental Hong Kong has taken the initiative to introduce an Ocean-Friendly Menu for their popular wedding banquets.
Riding on the successful collaboration, Holiday Inn Golden Mile, which is also under the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), has recently partnered with WWF-Hong Kong to source sustainable seafood. “We believe every effort counts, and even more, pooling together will make a greater impact around the world“, said Andreas Hoehne, Director of Food & Beverage of Holiday Inn Golden Mile Hong Kong.
