Although the commercial fishpond in and adjacent to the Mai Po Inner Deep
Bay Ramsar Site have a high ecological value, the current measures implemented
by the government only preserve the landscape value of the site. These
measures cannot maintain the ecological or socio-economic value of the
fishponds.
The ecological value of fish ponds can only be maintained by active management
of the fishermen. The management includes:

Complete drain down of the ponds in winter for harvesting
so that waterbirds can feed on the non-commercial fish and shrimps in the
bottom of the pond; |

Regular cutting of the grass along the pond bunds so
that the areas of short grass are available for roosting birds |

Ecological Value
| The fishponds are important to migratory water birds
because they provide stop-over sites where the birds can rest and feed
during their migration. |
