Freshwater and Wetland Conservation Programmes

Who wants to be a Wetland Reserve Officer?
This field-based wetland education programme at Mai Po teaches the basic concepts of wetland conservation management and the importance of the Mai Po Nature Reserve. Through the 4-hour programme, students will learn various ecological surveying techniques as well as participate in hands-on wetland fieldwork. For Secondary 1-7.  Apply

Wetland Encounter
This Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programme at Mai Po helps students to understand the uniqueness of the Mai Po wetlands. The 4-hour programme route covers bird hides, mangroves, Roundtable Boardwalk, gei wai and nearby fishponds, with several interactive activities along the way. For Secondary 1-3.  Apply

Wetland Ecologist
This programme at Mai Po gives students practical wetlands experience through surveying and field studies on wetland ecology. The 4-hour programme covers different aspects of the wetland environment, including wetland geography and associated wildlife. For Secondary 4-7. E-Learning Platform | Apply

Mai Po Multiplex
Through introductory trip, interviews and issue-enquiry approach discussions, students will understand the effect of individual actions, social characteristics and national policies on environmental changes and their interconnectedness. Students will use real-life examples in Mai Po and Deep Bay as discussion topics, adopt multiple perspectives to analyze the causes and impacts of the issues, and to investigate the interrelationship between the issues and global events such as climate change and sustainable development. Mangrove Ecology @ Deep Bay
Through study of the ecology of the largest mangrove area in Hong Kong, students will learn about important wetland functions and how they relate to greater conservation issues. In this 4-hour programme at Mai Po, students will learn how to identify native mangrove species and gain hands-on experience through various activities, as well as have a unique opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of Hong Kong’s wetland.  Apply

Urban Planner @ Deep Bay
This outdoor ESD programme at Mai Po highlights the various land uses in and around the Mai Po Nature Reserve. Extra focus is given to historical changes, current land use issues and land planning mechanisms in Hong Kong to provide students with a better understanding of the relationship between mankind and the natural landscape. Marine Conservation Programmes

Marine Discovery
Conducted at the Marine Life Centre, this marine education programme looks at various aspects of the marine environment, from geography to marine life and coral. Who Wants to be an Oceanographer?
This marine education programme offers students the kind of practical experience in marine science you can only obtain outside the classroom. The 4-hour programme features simple experiments related to physical and biological oceanography, observation and identification skills and a glass bottom boat tour to observe coral. Who Wants to be a Coastal Ecologist?
This field-based marine education programme introduces basic concepts of techniques used in the study of coastal habitats. In this 4-hour programme students will learn ecological concepts through the examination and identification of living invertebrates and marine plants. Tai Po New Town Field Study
The Tai Po New Town Field Study programme teaches students about the importance of town planning in environmental conservation. The programme involves a real case of problematic pollution in Tolo Harbour, and the changes in surrounding land usage in Tai Po New Town, and students will take part in a field trip to different areas in Tai Po district. This programme teaches the importance of balancing social, economic and environmental concerns when conducting town planning. Apply

Healthy Diet Healthy Ocean
This ESD exhibition pack promotes awareness of the impact of seafood consumption – something particularly relevant to Hong Kong. This educational resource helps students and teachers understand the relationship between the ocean and the seafood industry to inspire healthy sustainable living. For Secondary 1-7. Apply

Low Carbon Guru Programme
This programme is organised by WWF-Hong Kong in support of Public Engagement on “Combating Climate Change: Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction in Buildings” of Council for Sustainable Development. More than 100 Secondary 4-5 students joined the Low Carbon Guru Programme to gain better understanding of climate change issues and sustainable lifestyle, through different field activities and workshops. This nature-themed exhibition pack provides a virtual journey that showcases the beauty of Hong Kong’s natural habitats and biodiversity.
