WWF welcomes MSC’s ban on shark fin shipments

WWF-Hong Kong welcomes the announcement that Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has placed a ban on the shipping of shark fin products beginning on 21 January 2016.

WWF-Hong Kong welcomes the announcement that Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has placed a ban on the shipping of shark fin products beginning on 21 January 2016.

WWF has been communicating with MSC since July 2015, lobbying the company to enact a restrictive shark fin carriage policy. After being informed by WWF about the latest shipping industry trends regarding shark conservation and the impacts of the shark product industry on dwindling worldwide shark populations, MSC placed an embargo on shipments of shark fin and shark-related products, making an announcement on their website on 21 January 2016.

MSC is the second-largest shipping company in the world, with a global market share of 13.1 per cent[1]. MSC’s decision to act swiftly and decisively sets a good example to other companies in the global shipping industry. WWF looks forward to engaging other shipping companies as we continue to work towards establishing an industry-wide restrictive shark fin carriage policy.
