Protecting Hong Kong's Biodiversity
Creating a Place Where Life Can Thrive Together

Beneath Hong Kong’s familiar city skyline lies a vibrant metropolis that quietly shelters remarkable biodiversity and countless “hidden neighbours” still waiting to be discovered. From the wetlands of Mai Po to the forests of Tai Po Kau, from bustling city centres to tranquil beaches, our diverse ecosystems are woven together into an intricate web of life.

Nature’s Hidden Gems: Homes of the “Hidden Neighbours”

Hong Kong’s unique topography and range of habitats have given rise to an exceptional richness of species. Yet, ongoing urban expansion and growing human activities are putting heavy pressure on these fragile ecosystems. With the publication of The State of Hong Kong Biodiversity 2025 report by WWF-Hong Kong, together with local conservation organisations and ecologists, we now have a clearer picture that many species hidden in different habitats are facing unprecedented threats.

Challenges Facing the “Hidden Neighbours”

These “hidden neighbours” include threatened mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, invertebrates etc. They are all critical for maintaining ecological balance, yet their future is at risk due to habitat loss and degradation, invasive alien species, global climate change and other human-induced pressures.

Working Together: Protecting Hong Kong’s Wildlife

Now is the time to act; protecting our “hidden neighbours” can no longer wait. Each species has its own irreplaceable ecological value and plays a vital role in safeguarding Hong Kong’s overall environmental health. Through on-the-ground conservation, scientific research, public education, community collaboration and policy advocacy, we are working to conserve Hong Kong’s biodiversity.

Join us on Flag Day or make a donation to support our conservation work. Your contribution will help protect these precious species and safeguard Hong Kong’s natural environment. Together, we can build a sustainable future for people and nature.
