OCEANS

Our oceans are our planet's life support system.

Hong Kong has a profound connection to the sea, from a thriving fishing village to becoming Asia’s second-highest per-capita seafood consumers. But unfettered development is putting our ocean under risk.

OUR OCEAN, OUR UNIQUE TREASURE

From vibrant coral communities and lush mangroves to hidden seagrass beds, rich mudflats, and open waters, Hong Kong’s seas are bursting with life. These unique marine habitats are part of our natural heritage.

Yet this natural treasure is under threat. Rapid coastal development, pollution, unsustainable fishing practices, intense marine traffic, and overwhelming recreational use are putting pressure on our fragile marine ecosystems.

Did you know?

Hong Kong may be tiny on the map, but its marine biodiversity is mighty. With just 0.03% of China’s marine area, Hong Kong waters host over 5,900 marine species—that’s about one-quarter of all marine species recorded in China.

WWF’s vision on Oceans Conservation:

To achieve sound ocean governance — driven by ecosystem‑based marine spatial planning that sustainably manages all of Hong Kong’s waters, and is strengthened through expanded Marine Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures, to secure long‑term protection of marine biodiversity, so that people and nature can thrive together in a healthier, safer and more resilient Hong Kong.

Latest Update | Marine Ecology Conservation Actions at Sharp Island
From May through the peak summer months of 2026, WWF-Hong Kong is collaborating with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department to implement a series of exemplary coastal management and public education actions at Sharp Island. These include promoting “coral-friendly routes”, providing on-site guidance for snorkelling and kayaking activities, strengthening marine conservation public education, and working closely with industry stakeholders to encourage voluntary compliance and responsible ocean-use behaviours.

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)

MPAs, together with OECMs, are key to a sustainably-managed ocean. We propose five priority sites for marine conservation.
