WWF-Hong Kong: Innovating for Nature Conservation

WWF-Hong Kong leverages innovation and technology (I&T) to tackle environmental challenges and enhance nature conservation. Across three key focus areas – Wetlands, Oceans and Wildlife – we’re integrating cutting-edge solutions like Internet of Things (IoT) networks, artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring systems and data-driven tools to improve habitat management, protect biodiversity and address climate change. By combining traditional conservation knowledge with creative solutions and modern technology, we hope to create sustainable solutions that benefit both nature and people, and that drive impactful change for a healthier planet.

Smart Wetlands Initiative

Since 2022, WWF-Hong Kong has been implementing I&T-based solutions to scale up our conservation work in the Mai Po wetlands. These initiatives aim to unlock the full potential of wetland conservation in terms of research, habitat management, education, and site operations.

To date, over 100 IoT devices have been deployed across Mai Po’s complex landscapes, providing high-quality real-time data and insights. These devices play a critical role in monitoring and safeguarding this world-class wetland ecosystem and will help ensure its long-term sustainability.

The highlight projects below showcase our themed, technology‑enabled nature‑based solutions (NbS) in action. By combining ecological design with smart monitoring systems, data analytics, and automation, these projects demonstrate how innovation can amplify the impact of wetland conservation and climate resilience — creating scalable models for future‑ready conservation.​

Smart solutions are also embedded in the day‑to‑day management of Mai Po Nature Reserve. From visitor management systems that enhance safety and carrying‑capacity control, to AI‑powered wildlife identification that strengthens biodiversity monitoring, these applications illustrate how targeted technologies support practical, on‑the‑ground conservation outcomes.
